Show, Don’t Tell｜2026届国际生代表爱玲毕业典礼发言

6月26日上午，清华大学新闻与传播学院2026年毕业典礼在清华大学蒙民伟音乐厅举行。全球财经新闻硕士项目毕业生Arina Lvova（爱玲）代表学院全体国际毕业生感谢清华大学、新闻与传播学院为国际学生提供的宝贵机会以及师友亲朋的支持与陪伴。她以“Show, don’t tell”为线索，回顾自己在课程学习、跨文化活动、地方国际传播基地实践、媒体实习中的收获，分享了从“不确定是否准备好”到勇敢迈出第一步的心路历程。

Distinguished professors, honored guests, dear classmates and friends,Good morning.

My name is Arina, and it is a great honor to stand here today as a representative of the international  graduates  of  the  Global  Business  Journalism  program  at  the  School  of Journalism and Communication.

First  of all,  on  behalf  of all international graduates, I would like to express our sincere gratitude  to  Tsinghua  University,  to  our  school,  to  our  professors,  staff members,  and everyone who supported us throughout this journey. Thank you not only for educating us, but for creating opportunities for us to grow far beyond the classroom.

When I was invited to speak, my first reaction was surprise: “Are you sure you have the right person?” Years ago, I would not have imagined standing here today. 

And then I realized something familiar. In moments like this, my first instinct has often been the same: I am not ready. I think many of us know this feeling — waiting until we feel prepared  enough,  confident  enough,  or  experienced  enough.  Over  these  years,  I realized something: you do not always have to feel completely ready to take the first step. Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for certainty that we forget to actually begin.

One of our professors often reminded us:“Show, don’t tell.” So let me show you.

In my first semester, I was terrified of a business writing and economics course. I postponed it out of fear, only to realize later that being afraid was harder than actually doing the work.

And somehow, this lesson followed me far beyond that course.

Over these years at Tsinghua and at GBJ, I had opportunities I never expected when I first arrived.

Through  cultural  activities  and  field  trips  organized  by  GBJ  in  collaboration  with  local international communication centers across Zhejiang, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, and Xinjiang, I had the opportunity to experience a side of China that goes far beyond classrooms and headlines.

In Sichuan, I somehow even ended up becoming a panda ambassador — and honestly, where else would something like that happen? In Xinjiang, we experienced local culture through food, music, and dance and were reminded that understanding a place often begins with being curious enough to step outside what feels familiar. In Hangzhou, visiting tech companies showed us how rapidly Chinese industries transform ideas into global services.

Through  the  partnerships  and  opportunities  created  by  the  GBJ  program,  I  also  had the chance to intern at Ningbo Radio and Television Group. For the first time, I stepped outside university life and experienced communication in practice — from working on real projects to even conducting an interview with the CEO of a technology company, experiences I would never have imagined having before. We explored nearby villages and joined traditions like the winter solstice, becoming part of the story rather than just observing it. It reminded me that we do not grow after feeling ready—we become ready because we said "yes" first.

I want to take this chance to express my deepest gratitude to the School and our professors, especially my supervisor, Prof. Zhou Qingan, for your guidance.

And  finally,  I  want  to  thank  my  family  and  friends  —  for  supporting  my  sometimes unexpected and slightly crazy ideas, and for believing in my readiness much more than I do myself.

Class of 2026, as we leave, I hope we stay curious and continue choosing things that excite us, challenge us, and sometimes even scare us a little.
