外请教师代表李·米勒(Lee Miller)发言

毕业快乐! Congratulations to all families, friends, loved ones — and, most of all, today’s graduates.

Graduation is a day of Letters. BA, BS, MA, MS, PHD. Each of you has earned one of these new titles from Tsinghua University as part of a century-old tradition that, in exchange, expects you to live with Self-Discipline and Social Commitment.

These letters you receive today also reflect the skills you’ve taken from our beloved School of Journalism and Communication -- in News. In Filmmaking. In Animation and Sound. In economics and policy. In PR, IR, with ROR, C, C+ on OS, IOS, URL, GBJ, the BMC, 404. OMG!

Some of you will work at CCTV or CGTN. Others at ICBC or the UN. As a Tsinghua graduate you have unlimited opportunities from People’s Daily to Bloomberg and BYD to PWC.

A few of you – mostly our new PHDs -- will even continue the noble profession of being a professor. Thank you for your service!

Your new letters highlight both your personal efforts and achievements. But nothing happens in a void. Each of you had a support system of people who made their own sacrifices so YOU could move forward.

Your new letters must be shared with your classmates – and also with the men and women who worked in the canteens to feed you, the ayee who picked up after you in the dormitory, the ZTO and Meituan delivery people who risked their lives to bring you USB cables during the day and KFC at midnight.

Your achievements have also been made possible by your teachers and, most of all, by your family, especially M-O-M and D-A-D.

You may be the one wearing the new gown today, but your Mom and Dad also loved you in dirty diapers. Your success is their success. Your future prosperity is their prosperity, whether measured by KPI, B2B or when you become a CEO.

Each of you deserves your new degree. But this class is unique. Your education has been shaped by five letters, COVID.

The fact that you not only survived but managed to thrive over the past 3 years shows how you – more than any other Tsinghua graduates the past 112 years – are more resilient, more flexible and will be more appreciative of the happiness that awaits you in the future.

逆境出人才    NIJING CHU RENCAI  (adversity fosters talent)

There will be many more challenges to overcome. We don’t know how ChatGPT and AI will change the world. But today’s commencement ceremony is a reminder that each of you has already stared death in the face -- and you won. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

So live your life to the Fullest -- from A to Z. Because THE BEST IS YET TO COME.

Xie Xie.
